In 1909, Daisy Makeig-Jones was hired by the Wedgwood firm in Staffordshire, England, to decorate pottery. She would go on to develop the “Fairyland” luster pattern, which combined dazzling iridescent glazes with motifs from fairytales and would serve to revitalize the Wedgwood brand. Daisy’s Fairyland Lustre, which first appeared in late 1915 and reached the height of production in the 1920s. Daisy Makeig-Jones was one of the great women designers of the early 20th century, and she recognized in her lustrewares a well-deserved status of fine art. Given the variation and unpredictability of the glazes and decorative techniques, as well as Daisy’s penchant for experimentation, each Lustre piece is truly unique. The pieces that exist today are unique and rare works by a rare and uncommon individual whose creation is a testament to her innovation, brilliance, and persistence. Any collection of Daisy Makeig-Jones’s work ought to include her Fairyland Lustres, as they represent a significant moment in the history of ceramics, if not only as the genesis of her later works. Limited editions and the ever-growing interest in Daisy Makeig-Jones’ work have led to prices rising year on year. Many collectors regard the purchase of Daisy Makeig-Jones designs as a sound investment.
