Stunning Pair of French Limoges Hard Paste Enameled Porcelain and Ormolu Twin Handle Table or Mantle Urns of traditional urn form and of outstanding quality, and good size proportions, each raised on a square stepped base with canted corners. Complete with original dome shaped covers with plain lobed finials. Late Nineteenth, early Twentieth Century.  

The twin handles exquisitely modelled as elegant scrolling foliage. The central front oval reserve depicting Summer Flowers with lavish gilt surround, back view as shown, see image, on a rich cobalt blue ground.   

Condition: Good condition for such early pieces with no losses to porcelain, bronze mounts with original gilding, some light staining at ormolu bases.

Limoges had strong antecedents in the production of decorative objects. The city was the most famous European centre of vitreos enamel production in the 12th century, and Limoge's enamel was known as Opus de Limogia or Labor Limogiae. The manufacturing of hard-paste porcelain at Limoges was established by Turgot in 1771 

A manufactory at Limoges was placed under the patronage of the comte d’Artois, brother of Louis XVI, and was later purchased by the King in 1784, apparently with the idea of producing hard-paste bodies for decoration at Sevres, although this never happened. 

After the French Revolution a number of private factories were established at Limoges, including Bernardaud, Haviland & Co. and Royal Limoges. 

Limoges maintains the position it established in the 19th century as the premier manufacturing city of porcelain in France to this present day.
