Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville (1852-1941) Born in Paris was a painter of still lifes and animals. He was a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais, where he exhibited for many years commencing in 1879. Highly skilled, he was popular both during his lifetime and after his death. Today his paintings are found in collections on both sides of the Atlantic, including several French collections in Beziers, Brest, Chateau-Thierry, and Louviers. Stylistically, both Brunel's still lifes and animal pictures are squarely in the Realist style, reflecting the later 19th-century trend toward acute observation and the abandonment of the Romantic excesses of the earlier 19th-century. In his acclaimed painting of cats and kittens, Brunel captures the playfulness and charm of domestic pets realistically and with an absence of sentimentality. The charm and verisimilitude of these works have earned the artist renewed respect and popularity amongst collectors increasinly appreciative of this genre.
