Royal Doulton's chief designer, Charles Noke (1858-1941) and his colleagues experimented with firing techniques and metallic oxides in their pursuit of re-developing these highly ornamental transmutation glazes inspired by ancient Chinese antecedents. Their tests and trials resulted in sophisticated patterns and color combinations unique to every example of Doulton's artistic Flambe ware. This is an example of the outcome of their work.
