FINE IRISH DUBLIN SILVER SALVER DATED 1834

Superb Irish Dublin Silver Heavy Gauge William IV Circular Salver.

The shaped scroll shell edge with fruit and bird embossed decoration, raised on hoof feet.

Mark of  ILB for James le Bas. Dated 1834. Also struck with Retailers mark LAW for William Law.

Condition: Good condition with no imperfections. Professionally polished

Diameter: (entire just under) 9” (22.5cm).

Weight: (an impressive) 15.4.ozs. (434 grams).

James le Bas was a silversmith working in Dublin in the early 19th century. He was a member of a famous family of silversmiths, his father, William, being a silversmith in London, as were his sons, William and Benjamin.

He originally trained in London, working for his father, and moved to Dublin circa 1800. His first workshop was on Great Strand Street in Dublin, until 1809, whereupon he moved to Ship Street, at the side of Dublin Castle. He died in 1845.

His maker’s mark was ILB, with dots between, in a rectangular surround.

Retailer William Law 1766-1820 was succeeded by William Law & Son from 1815 addreses at 20 Cole Abbey, Castle Street from 1766 . 1& 2 Sackviller Street (now Oconnell St) from 1798 in Dublin.
