284. Antique Anglo Indian Vizagapatam Stag Antler Horn Sandalwood Document Box Casket


A Very Impressive Example of an Anglo-Indian Stag Antler Horn Gentleman’s Document Box of outstanding quality and generous proportions. Made in Vizagapatam, India, during the first quarter of the Nineteenth Century. The rectangular dome shaped cover with very stylish radiating segmented long narrow strips and a central rectangular tablet. The entire body with vertical sections on all four sides.    

This rare and unusual item is made in Sandalwood and is veneered in thickly carved strips of natural unpolished Antler Horn only, with no Ivory used anywhere.   

Condition: Superb condition for such an early piece, professionally re-lined inside in very dark cobalt blue velvet, which is very nicely done. Lock is present, key is not original and does not turn. There is a tiny loss to horn in one top corner, see image, underneath has been re-done in dark green leatherette, see final image.
