965. Sold. Rare 18th Century Miniature Verre-Eglomise Picture


 

An Extremely Rare Verre-Eglomise Oval Framed View of two goats in landscape beside a river with two peasants beyond set in a landscape with trees flowers and birds all in fine detail within original brass frame with a gadrooned border.

 

Condition: Good overall condition, the back brown paper has possibly been replace at sometime. English Trade label "Sterart" Modeller of portraits in wax, engraver and print seller. Near Great Turnstile, Holborn.

Verre-Eglomise how its done: This is an ancient and highly skilled process where silver leaf is applied to the reverse of glass the detailed view is then scratched through afterwards black pigment is applied behind to enhance and protect the silver leaf.

Few pre 19th Ct examples have survived, this is a lovely example.
