275. Superb Grand Tour Sienna Marble Clock Scythian Knife Grinder Bronze


A Very Fine Grand Tour Well Veined Sienna Marble French Mantle Clock of medium proportions, early Nineteenth Century.

The circular dial with Roman numerals and bronze foliage surround, the silk suspension movement complete with original two part pendulum.

A well cast solid bronze figure of the Scythian Knife-Grinder sits on top.

The rectangular marble body is raised on a reeded bronze frame with lavish scroll supports and acanthus leaf bronze mounts.

 

Width: (at base) 10.75" (27.5cm). Height: (entire) 18.25" (46.5cm). Protrudence: 6" (15.5cm).

 

 

Note: A large size model of the Scythian Knife-Grinder can be seen at Blenheim Palace near Oxford, England which was secured by The Duke of Marlborough from Massimiliano Soldani in 1711.
